A Tribute To Charlie Poole

A TRIBUTE TO CHARLIE POOLE
THE NEW NORTH CAROLINA RAMBLERS
OLD BLUE CD-712

The second in the TRIBUTE SERIES is to Charlie Poole. Using the New North Carolina Ramblers for the current band was a no-brainer.  Kinney, manager, singer, and banjoist, is related to Poole and has been playing Charlie’s music for over 50 years!  The other two members, Jeremy Stephens (fiddle) and Darren Moore (guitar), have been playing with Kinney for six or seven years.   A special treat is Corrina Logston who adds a second fiddle on four tracks.

BANJO CLASSICS
FROM THE VAULTS OF COUNTY & OLD BLUE RECORDS
OLD BLUE CD-710

There’s an old adage that true, strong growth comes from great roots. On this CD the roots are banjo players like Wade Ward, Fred Cockerham, Lilly May Ledford. The growth true to its roots are banjo players like Seth Boyd, Mac Traynham, and Kevin and Trish Fore.

The 32 tracks of traditional banjo music prove the adage. No bluegrass banjo here — but that doesn’t mean all clawhammer, although there’s plenty of that. There’re also examples of North Carolina up-picking, thumb-cocking (or double-thumbing), and three-finger. In addition to the different styles in which a five-string banjo can be played, there are a number of tunes played in “non-standard” banjo tunings.

None of these performances — ranging from as early as 1958 through present day — has ever been released before! One of these is a tune Kyle Creed played for which even Kyle could remember the name or from whom he got it!!

The icing on the cake is the extensive liner notes by Buckingham.

Fiddle Classics CD

FIDDLE CLASSICS
FROM THE VAULTS OF COUNTY & OLD BLUE RECORDS
OLD BLUE CD-709

28 fiddle tunes from the masters of their regions: Virginia, West Virginia, New England (Canada), Texas, Missouri, and Kentucky. 23 tracks, recorded almost a half-century ago, come from the vaults of County Records. The remaining tracks, recorded within the last three years, come from the vaults of Old Blue Records.

None of the performances have appeared on a CD before. And only six made it to vinyl: 1, 4, 8, 13, 18, & 27.

Given the plethora of recorded music on the Internet, one might say, “Oh, I’ve heard that tune before.” But this collection offers something more: it is these musicians who, with their powerful, imaginative fiddling, have made these tunes classics.

No one would argue that the County recordings are not classics -- nor would anyone a generation in the future disagree that the Old Blue recordings had long been classics.

Galax CD

TED LUNDY AND THE SOUTHERN MOUNTAIN BOYS    OLD BLUE CD-707

This CD covers a decade of the most productive years of Ted Lundy and his band, the Southern Mountain Boys – eighteen bluegrass tracks recorded between 1962 and 1971.

Always a powerful singer and exceptional banjo player, he also was able to gather equally talented musicians — like Fred Hannah and Bob Paisley— around him. Raised in the Galax, Virginia area, he absorbed its rich musical traditions and clearly can be considered one of the founders of the Galax Sound.

Live and Lively

THE NEW NORTH CAROLINA RAMBLERS
OLD BLUE CD-706

Live and Lively

The New North Carolina Ramblers never cease to astonish their audiences with unfamiliar tunes played with unexpected instruments… and always true to their deeps roots in to old-time rural music. They have few peers who can match their abilities to find the best music from the early days of country music, now almost a century behind us. They capture the spirit and heart of that music using instruments from autoharp to piano, before a live audience or recording microphones.

Kirk & Riley CD

KIRK SUTPHIN & RILEY BAUGUS
OLD BLUE CD-705

Old-Time Piedmont Pals

This is the only CD, out of the many on which they have appeared, that focuses exclusively on these two renowned musicians who grew up on the same road and rode the school bus together. It contains songs that they learned from the old-timers in their neck of the woods, including Tommy Jarrell and Dix Freeman. Some of the tunes are old chestnuts, known and treasured by many - but only a few people will know all of these songs.
