A TRIBUTE TO THE HILL BILLIES    OLD BLUE CD-711
The Stage Hogs

The Stage HogsAl Hopkins and his band, best known as the Hill Billies, was composed of musicians residing in the Greater Galax area.  They recorded over 70 sides from 1925 to 1928.  It was a band of many firsts: the first to play for a president (President Coolidge), the first country musicians to perform in New York City, and the first to appear in a movie.  It was also one of the first, if not the first band to “work the mike” to highlight a particular instrument.  It is appropriate that it is the first old time band to kick off Old Blue Records’ new series – tributes to old time bands played by current players.

The Stage Hogs — Eddie Bond, Kirk Sutphin, Snake Smith, Kevin Fore and Tom Mylet— also come from the Greater Galax area and easily match, if not surpass, the musical talents of the Hill Billies.  There is no better choice for a band to pay tribute to the original Hill Billies.
